How to choose your fragrance first time: just three questions

Faced with dozens of bottles, choosing feels hard. It gets much simpler when you start with the right questions.

Before the questions: let go of “the best fragrance”

There is no fragrance that is best for everyone. There is the one that suits you, in a certain place at a certain time. So we start with three simple questions rather than a list of names.

Question one: where and when will you wear it?

An office fragrance isn’t an evening fragrance. For daytime and work, a light, elegant scent that doesn’t arrive in the room before you usually suits best; for evenings and occasions you can choose something deeper with more presence. And it’s wise not to rely on a single fragrance for every hour of the day.

Question two: what’s the weather like?

Heat boosts a fragrance’s spread and speeds up its evaporation, so light, fresh scents feel more comfortable in summer, while warm, rich ones suit the cold. Where summers are hot and winters cold, you might want a fragrance for each season.

Question three: what impression do you want to leave?

Do you want to be known for calm or for boldness, for warmth or for freshness? Write down three words that describe you as you’d like people to see you, then look for a fragrance that matches those words.

Get to know the fragrance families

The industry sorts scents into broad families, and knowing them shortens your path:

  • Fresh: light and clean, suited to daytime and summer.
  • Floral: soft and often feminine, either quiet or eye-catching.
  • Woody: warm and deep, giving a sense of confidence and composure.
  • Oriental (amber): rich, warm and present, suited to evenings and cold weather.
  • Aromatic: inspired by herbs, combining freshness with composure.
  • Sweet (gourmand): reminiscent of desserts and warmth.

Note that these descriptions are general, and every fragrance house interprets them in its own way.

Then test it… and don’t stop at the paper strip

A paper strip gives you a quick idea, but a fragrance changes on skin. Spray your wrist and wait, then ask yourself an hour later: do I still love what I smell? That is the real test. And take a look at the fragrance pyramid to understand why the scent changes.

Common mistakes when choosing

  • Judging a fragrance by the first spray alone.
  • Trying too many fragrances in one session, which tires the nose.
  • Choosing a fragrance because you liked it on someone else’s skin.
  • Choosing a single fragrance for every season.

Know your skin

Dry skin loses fragrance faster than other skin types, so moisturising before you apply helps. Oily skin usually holds it for longer. That’s why the same fragrance can differ from one person to another, and it’s one more reason to try it on your own skin.

Think of a “fragrance wardrobe”, not a single bottle

Many fragrance lovers combine three kinds: a light one for day and work, a deeper one for evenings, and a special one for occasions. You needn’t start with all three, but the idea helps you choose consciously: what am I missing today?
