What does L’AVENIR mean, and why does the future begin with scent?

We chose the name because it carries an idea we live by: a fragrance is a trace that stays, not a smell that passes.

What does L’AVENIR mean?

It’s a French word meaning “the future”, pronounced roughly “lav-NEER”. It comes from the phrase à venir, “what is to come”: what hasn’t happened yet, but is on its way to us.

Why scent?

Of all the senses, smell is the closest to memory. What the nose picks up reaches parts of the brain linked to memory and emotion. That’s why a passing scent can take you back to a place, a person or a moment from years ago, without your meaning it to.

Some people call this the “Proust effect”, after the French novelist Marcel Proust, who described how a simple taste and smell brought his whole childhood back.

This is why a fragrance is closer to a trace than to a product: it’s the first thing of you that reaches other people, and the last thing to remain after you leave.

What “the future has a scent” means

The future isn’t only what we see or read; it’s what we feel before it happens. And scent sometimes arrives before the picture does. You walk into a room and know someone was there before you; you catch a smell and know a new season has begun. That is where our name and our slogan come from.

What do we promise?

We don’t promise more than we can prove, and the wearing remains the judge. That is what our line means: the proof is in the wearing. It’s why every bottle comes with a 3 ml sample, so you can try the scent on your skin before you decide.
